I talk about a health related topic in every article Care N Assist publishes. I have not in 43 publications said one word about oral health. I was reminded of this as the Area Agencies on Aging began to advertise presentations taking place across the state called “Tooth Wisdom”. I would like to encourage everyone to take a moment to check out their websites listed at the end of this article to see what days and times you can attend.

Because a healthy mouth is a key to enjoying so many things while aging I would like all of you to chew on this idea. “Now days over 75% of people over 65 years old still have their teeth, or at least they have most of them”…

Remember the TV advertisement for the bonding adhesive for dentures? They showed pictures of people singing in the choir or eating dinner in public. They are smiling and without worry that their dentures will fall out when they hit the high notes. I would like to say that even better than a good denture adhesive would be having your own teeth and having them healthy.

Doing simple things that keep your teeth healthy begins when you are young, but it is never to late to create a new healthy habit. For starters the things you can do yourself include brushing and flossing your teeth regularly and avoid chewing on ice or other objects that will damage your teeth. It is also important for you to see a dentist who will screen for other problems and assist you by repairing your teeth as needed.

If you are not doing these things, then you are putting your mouth at risk for tooth decay, gum disease or even cancer. Serious infections can affect your over all health and pain related to tooth problems can keep you from enjoying life. Think about your favorite meal, singing your favorite song, or talking to your best friend. All of these things rely on your mouth being healthy.

Don’t let anything stand in the way of you enjoying the simple pleasures as you age. Keep your “big mouth” healthy and the rest of your body will appreciate it. If you find yourself needing help with cooking meals, traveling to church or needing companionship, consider hiring Care N Assist. Our Home Care Aides are trained and ready to work for you.
